The failure arrives as no signal
A PS5 may reach the bench with a visibly damaged HDMI port, an intermittent image, or no display at all. I begin by listening to what happened, checking the connector mechanically, and inspecting the surrounding area under magnification before heat or solder touches the board.
The port is only the beginning
Physical damage can affect solder joints, pads, traces, filters, and nearby components. Replacing the connector without inspecting the full path can leave the original failure unresolved.
A clean repair needs evidence
Visual inspection, continuity checks, diode-mode measurements, signal-path knowledge, and controlled testing build confidence before the console is returned.
Verification matters
The final test should cover stable video output, cable behavior, port fit, thermal behavior, and the conditions that originally caused the failure.
The repair is not finished when the port sits flat
A connector can look perfect while a torn pad, damaged trace, filter, or downstream signal component still prevents video. After installation I verify continuity and diode readings, inspect every pin and anchor, clean the area, reassemble carefully, and test stable output with known-good cables and displays.
A complete repair follows the entire signal path
The connector is the point that receives physical force, but the symptom may involve more than the connector. Under magnification I look for movement, cracked joints, missing pads, disturbed traces, damaged filters, contamination, and earlier repair attempts. Those observations determine whether replacement is appropriate or whether the diagnosis must continue farther into the HDMI circuit.
Removing the damaged port requires controlled heat, protection for nearby components, and patience with the board's thermal mass. After preparing the pads, the replacement must sit mechanically square with every signal pin properly joined and every anchor strong enough to tolerate normal cable use. A visually clean result is important because it makes inspection possible, but appearance alone does not prove electrical continuity.
Verification closes the repair. I compare measurements across the signal lines, inspect the area again, confirm that the port grips the cable correctly, and test stable video with known-good equipment. The console should survive restarts, cable movement, resolution changes, and normal operating temperature. Returning an image once is not the goal. Returning a reliable signal path is.
